SYMBOLISM OF CRUCIFIXES
The crucifix represents the meaning of salvation and Christ's sacrifice on the cross. Crucifixes can be a traditional design, symbolizing the Passion of Christ or a more embellished design symbolizing Christ Glorified. These can be found as pendants, earrings or as an integral part of rosary beads.
There is also what is called an Orthodox crucifix that has a slightly different look than the traditional crucifix. This one has two horizontal bars, instead of one, and a diagonal bar that intersects the vertical bar of the cross. The cross still holds the Christ figure. The top horizontal bar symbolizes the phrase "INRI", that Pontius Pilot had placed on Christ's cross and means "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." The lower diagonal bar symbolizes the two thieves that were crucified with Christ. The higher end represents the good one and the lower end represents the unrepentant one.
